Steam News

It has been another fun term in STEAM with students engaging in lots of activities.

Preps have been experimenting with varied materials and techniques from painting and drawing to printing. They have also been learning how to make a simple moving part by joining paper together with a split pin.

Grade One students have learned about surface tension and how to create marbling effects using oil and paint on water. They have also investigated how their bodies and objects move in the world, using their imaginations to create their own mixed-up chameleon, by experimenting with crayons and texture boards.

Grade Two and Three are learning how the different forces of push and pull can be combined to move objects along a Rube Goldberg machine. By working in teams, they created their own machines, incorporating levers, pulleys and ramps to make a pet feeder.

Grade Four students completed a unit called “Magnetic Fairground Games”. By recycling materials, they used their creative thinking skills to design and build a game using at least one magnet to control its outcome. Below are some examples.

Grade Five students have examined how the properties of light can be used to create a shadow puppet theatre. They worked in teams to create a scripted play which included props and a shadow puppet with a moving limb. As part of their investigations, they practised using a mirror to write a message to understand how light reflects.

Our Grade Sixes have completed a unit on ‘Electrical Circuits.’ They experimented and built simple circuits using Snap Circuit Boards. Students have applied their knowledge to understand how electrical circuits operate household objects in everyday life. As part of the Unit, students were introduced to “Makey Makey,” an invention kit to connect everyday objects to computer keys. Using “Scratch,” a coding program, they have made musical instruments and created an orchestra of sounds.
