Did you know?
Melton South Primary State School 3717 is significant for its association with the development of the state education in this area of Melton.
It was originally located in a small building at the railway line when the it opened in1884 prompted by a number of industries including sawmills and chaff mills. By 1912 the small Melton Railway Station settlement had a boarding house, store, small church and hall.
In 1910 the community had built the large timber ‘Victoria Hall’ and land was set aside for the establishment of a school. District Inspector McRae recommended that a school for classes up the Grade 3 be established as an adjunct to the Melton Sate School so “Melton Railway School’ was established. Thomas Lang was the first head maser in charge of both schools. At the petition of parents to the Education Department the schools were combined. Issues such as the hall being too large, had no fireplace and being too noisy, being only 20 metres from the chaff mill.
Built in 1923 the original school building is architecturally significant and although altered and extended still demonstrates its original design.
In April of that year 41 children comprising Grades 1 – 8 moved into an almost completed brick building on this site. A teacher’s residence had been purchased for 500 pounds and the school was renamed Melton South. The original Melton South school building is protected by a heritage overlay.

You will be asked to provide proof of address as a condition of your enrolment.
During the enrolment process you will be asked to provide supporting documentation such as your child’s birth certificate and Immunisation History Statement. If you do not have these documents, contact the school for advice and support.
You must consult with all other adults with parental responsibility when enrolling your child in school, unless it is unsafe to do so. If there are reasons why the other parent should not be contacted, please let the school know. Parents and carers can co-sign the same form or complete separate forms
Every child has the right to attend their local school. Children with disability have the same right to enrol in their local school as children without disability. All schools must make reasonable adjustments so that students with disability can learn and achieve on the same basis as other students. As well as local schools, there are a range of government specialist schools and education settings for students with specific disabilities and high needs.
A school zone defines an area’s designated neighbourhood government school (local school). In Victoria, it is usually the nearest school by the shortest practical route. Your child’s permanent place of residence is the address at which they permanently live at the time of enrolment. If your child lives at multiple addresses, their permanent residence is the address at which they spend most of their weekdays.
All government primary and secondary schools are presented on the Find my School website. Type in your home address and the website will then find your local school.
What happens if I move out of school zone Victoria?
Your child is guaranteed a place if they live within the school zone. If you do not live in the school zone, you still have the choice to request enrolment at your preferred government school. Applications are considered in line with the Placement policy.
If your child holds a fee-liable visa (for example a student or dependent student visa, visitor or tourist visa, or a bridging visa in some instances) you should apply for enrolment in a government school at study.vic.gov.au or apply directly to your school of choice.
Your first point of call is to see the classroom teacher or send a note in your child’s diary requesting a phone call.
Should you need to contact the general office please be mindful that teacher’s cannot leave their classrooms to speak to parents during the school day. However, messages will always be passed on to receive a return call.

Bell times
8.35am – School gates are opened
8.50am – Students are able to enter their classroom and get ready for the school day (1st Bell)
9.00am – Commencement of morning session (10:50am students to eat snacks in classroom)
11.00am – Morning recess
11.30am – Commencement of pre- lunch session
1.30pm – Lunch time (eating period from 1.15 to 1.30) Specialist to supervise when non-contact time.
2.15pm – Commencement of afternoon session
3.15pm – Close of the school day (Staff to walk students out into the yard and supervise exit)
School gates and bike shed are locked at 9.15am and opened at 3.05pm except on Fridays for assembly, when they are opened at 2:30pm. Gates are locked again after school at 3.45.
Students are able to bring a brown paper bag with their lunch order written out. Please ensure you state their name, grade and room number clearly with the money included.
