Subject Areas

Victorian Curriculum 2.0 English

English is taught through three closely connected areas: Language, Literature, and Literacy. These areas work together to help students build strong communication and comprehension skills.

Students develop their abilities in listening & speaking, reading & viewing, and writing through rich, purposeful learning experiences.

Here’s how it looks in the classroom:

  • Language
Students learn how English works — including grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure — so they can speak and write clearly.
  • Literature
Students explore stories, poems, plays, and novels from different cultures and times. They learn to respond to and think deeply about texts.
  • Literacy
Students apply their language skills in real-world contexts — writing purposeful pieces, reading a variety of texts, and presenting ideas.
They learn strategies to help them read with accuracy and understanding, and to spell words correctly, building strong foundations for lifelong literacy.
  • At our school, we believe students learn best when subjects are meaningfully connected. That’s why we teach through Units of Investigation

Mathematics

Mathematics involves students counting, estimating, calculating, recognizing patterns, using fractions, decimals and percentages, as well as, learning about spatial reasoning, and interpreting and drawing conclusions from statistical information.

Students use measurement when they are recording and comparing lengths, mass, area, volume, capacity and time. At Melton South primary we endeavour to equip each child with the ability to estimate, problem solve, investigate and reflect as they learn independently and collaboratively with others.

Ongoing assessment, monitoring and evaluating are vital to the planning and teaching of our numeracy program and teachers maintain high expectations of all students. We believe in equality for each student, therefore numeracy teaching is personalised to ensure that each student reaches their full potential.

Science, Technology Engineering, and Mathematics

The STEM teaching and learning program uses content knowledge and understandings from Mathematics, Science and Design and Technologies. It also aims to develop capabilities such as critical and creative thinking, collaboration and ethical decision making.

Each STEM class will have a focus on new and technical vocabulary, and a growth mindset approach.

Our STEM classes place great importance on working with others and sharing our ideas. Recording our designs and ideas and thinking occurs in our books, or through videos and photos on our iPads.

F-6 Units of work may be linked to class investigations to build upon and deepen student understanding of a particular topic.

Melton South has double classrooms designated for the use of STEM classes and resourced with Lego kits, relevant information texts and tubs of resources to use in STEM investigations. Recently we have purchased two new 3D printers for the students to use and develop their coding skills.  The staff and students are also excited to use the new Virtual Reality glasses and associated programs to enhance their experience in STEM.

Health and Physical Education

Students participate in Physical Education (PE) to help them acquire movement skills and concepts and strategies to enable students to confidently and creatively participate in a range of physical activities.

At Melton South, we want students to develop their ability to participate in physical activity, work to constantly improve their performance, and understand the importance of physical activity in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Students also complete one session a week of sport with their year level in Prep. This takes the form of the Perceptual Motor Skills program (PMP).

We also have a long association with the MSSPA whereby schools compete in team events such as: Cricket, Softball, Volleyball, Bat Tennis, Football & Netball,  either at home or at their competing school.

Respectful Relationships

The Arts

Visual Arts

The Visual Art program at Melton South involves students making and responding to artworks, drawing on the world as a source of ideas. Students engage with and develop their knowledge of visual arts, skills, techniques and processes, and use materials as they explore a range of forms, styles and contexts. Through Visual Arts, students learn to reflect critically on their own experiences and responses to the work of artists.

Performing Arts

The Performing Art program encompasses music, drama and dance, it is designed to build student self-confidence in their creative ability. Students engage in activities that allow them to use their bodies to communicate through drama and dance. They learn to make music using the voice, body, instruments, technologies and other sources.

French

Learning languages broadens students’ horizons about the personal, social, and cultural opportunities that are available in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world. The interdependence of countries and communities requires people to negotiate experiences and meanings across languages and cultures.

Digital Technology

At Melton South Primary school we support student learning by;

  • Providing laptops and ipads across the school P-6 to all our students
  • 3D printers in STEM
  • Virtual reality glasses
  • SMART TV and screens in all learning spaces
  • Document cameras.

Units of Investigation

At our school, we believe students learn best when subjects are meaningfully connected. That’s why we teach through Units of Investigation, which integrate:

Subject Areas such as:

  • Science
  • Humanities
  • Health

with English:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking and Listening

Each year level explores informational and literary units that are aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, ensuring students gain the knowledge, understanding and skills they are expected to achieve.

How Units Are Taught

Teachers use a clear, structured approach when delivering each unit. This includes:

  • Focusing lessons on specific learning goals
  • Providing explicit teaching of concepts and skills
  • Using a variety of activities to engage all learners
  • Incorporating opportunities for students to apply what they’ve learned
  • Assessing student understanding through meaningful tasks

This approach ensures students are supported at every stage of their learning and can make real-world connections across subjects.

Example: Grade 4 Unit on Sustainability

In a Grade 4 unit on sustainability, students might:

  • Explore how natural resources are used, managed, and conserved (Science)
  • Write informative reports about ways to reduce waste at school and home (Writing)
  • Read a variety of texts including articles, infographics, and information texts (Reading)
  • Take part in group discussions and presentations (Speaking & Listening)

Through this unit, students build knowledge and vocabulary across subjects but also develop critical thinking and strong communication skills in a real-world context.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

At Melton South Primary School we support students from non-english speaking backgrounds with staff and supports to ensure communication is fluent.  Please let us know if you need a translator at any face to face meetings.
